About the practice: Fetal Imaging

Fetal Imaging is a sonographer-based practice which is perfect for all low-risk patients. Scans are done by qualified sonographers who each have more than 25 years of experience. We are accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation in Nuchal Translucency Scans. We have been part of the Al-Nisa ultrasound service since the very beginning, providing quality obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations. We have a good relationship with the fetal medicine departments at Groote Schuur Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital for advice and referrals. All private patients are referred to the private fetal specialist practices. We are passionate about our profession and pride ourselves on good quality scans done in a friendly yet professional manner.

Our fees remain low as we do not have fetal specialists within the practice, so any complications or concerns that are picked up will naturally be referred to the appropriate specialist. We also feel that there is a need within our community for Nuchal Translucency Scans and Fetal Anomaly scans at affordable prices. All ultrasound examinations done have a detailed report which is given to each patient or emailed to their referring doctor.

Ultrasounds offered:

Basic or dating scan (usually your first scan) are done from 7 weeks.. This confirms your pregnancy, checks the fetal heartbeat, assesses the gestational age and provides an expected due date.

Nuchal Translucency scan (NT scan) is done between 12 and 13 weeks and 6 days. This is a screening test that involves measuring the amount of fluid at the back of the fetal neck as well as the presence of the nasal bone. The software used provides an indication for the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, specifically Downe’s Syndrome. Accompanying bloods (first trimester biochemistry) are optional and provides an improved accuracy in determining the risk for chromosomal abnormalities. Bloods are done and paid directly by patients to the laboratory.

Fetal Anomaly (FA) scan can be done between 18 and 24 weeks, ideally 20-22 weeks for improved visibility of the fetus. This scan provides a review of the fetal growth and a comprehensive assessment of the fetal anatomy. It is also the best time to assess the gender accurately.

Growth scans are done at any time during the pregnancy except between 18 and 24 weeks. It assesses the growth, fetal position, amniotic fluid and general fetal well-being.

Gynaecological scans (non-pregnancy scans) must be accompanied by a referral letter from your doctor. The patient is advised to have advise a full bladder before their scan.
